Alright guys I am 3 weeks into this and I think its looking good with good results on fish so far. I have been detecting some ammonia, nitrite and nitrates however. Been doing a 40% water change ever other day.

I have also noticed a little alge building up on the fake piece of wood.

That is diatoms, or commonly called brown algae. it is usual in new tanks, during the first 2-3 months normally. It will dissappear on its own. I would rub it off plant leaves but otherwise not worry. The normal algae-eating fish like Otos, Farlowella, Whiptails, plecos will eat this and common green algae. I don't recommend getting special fish just for this, but mention it in case you are planning such fish as part of the tank.
