but are you supposed to take them off? because I didn't...and I read somewhere that they are supposed to be removed before planting...:|

Are you referring to the lead weights wrapped around some bunch plants? Then yes, they should be removed before planting the plants. Use the substrate to hold the plants down instead.

Your fish aren't going to die or anything, just don't leave them on.

Lead isn't really harmful as long as it's in good condition, but the problem is that it breaks down in water. Just remove them ASAP.

they wont kill fish at the start but will kill of shrimps

Don't worry dear, you are not alone. Nobody told me that when I first planted either and I just buried the plants with those on. I thought they were needed to hold the stems together. Live and Learn. ha ha
