Is it bad to use filter media that has carbon in it? If so, should I cut it and take it out?
I would remove it.Carbon will remove nutrients that the plants need.
Agree. However, carbon "wears out" in time, fairly quickly actually, and the more stuff it adsorbs the quicker. So after a few weeks, it has probably lost its capability to do anything, and you could just leave it rather than messing with the filter design. However, if it is a separate pouch/insert or something and can be easily removed, then I would and replace it with regular filter floss/pad, whatever.
Thanks for the posts guys.
