new tank and cloudy water+ what is this cat?
http://www.tropicalfishkeeping.com/&...h/100_2489.jpg[/IMG]http://www.tropicalfishkeeping.com/&...h/100_2489.jpgHi, I have a new tank 30 days in the working. My mother-in-law gave to me , I guess she was tired of it.
Its been set up for 30 days now. I do know it is still trying to cycle. It came with fish and all. I did not have another tank to keep the fish while it was cycling .
I have a bit of cloudy water, Monday I did a 1/4 water change and used Tetra AquaSafe for the chlorine, yesterday I added amQuel+ because it was not looking any better . My fish seem to be doing ok all thru this. I do not have a water tester yet and wont be able to get until the weekend, or fist of the week.
I am stumped as to what to do. Help thanks
I do have a 6 inch cat and I do now know what it is, I actually do not like it but cant find anyone to take him off my hands. Plus I do not know what the heck he is.
the tank is a 50 gallon.
It looks like it could be a Synodontis eupterus (Feather-Fin catfish), perhaps?
Why do you not care for him? I like his looks, if you lived nearby I'd gladly take him off your hands, he looks to be a heathy specimen.
I wonder if the combo of Amquel+ and the Tetra Aquasafe combined contributed anything to cloudy water? I only use one water conditioner (Prime) and never experienced cloudy water at new tank set up time, while they were cycling. Getting a liquid test kit is an invaluble tool, without it it's not possible to tell where you are in the tank's cycle. That's good you'll be getting one soon.
You say your Mother-In-Law had the tank and gave it to you? Wondering why the tank is cycling...was the tank moved "dry", from her house to yours?
Thanks for all the reply's. Yes I set the tank back up dry. It has to be moved. All the fish came with the tank. As for the cat, its to big and actually very ugly!.lol
I am looking for someone to take the angel, think that would be better them all the gourami's
the goldfish also came with the tank. I may put him in my pond outside with all my other golds and they have lived for 4 winters . but he may be just a tad to small since it is the end of august.
Featherfins are known for being territorial and attacking other bottom-dwelling fish. My pleco stays away from him, and they seem to get along fine. but really want to find another home for him.
Yes you are right, I teach Multiple handicap kids and I do have a soft heart, but this darn tank is killing me. I guess I will have to go and get the water tester and then post my results. thanks again!!! :-)
Too bad you weren't closer to me. I'd take that syno. They can get pricey at the store.
I would feed the fish a tiny amount of food ,about half a dime size amount ONCE every other day. Don't worry fish will be fine with this until the tank has cycled. After that,,you can feed twice each day .
I would not clean or replace anything in the filter for the next month. The filter is an area where the majority of good bacteria will be trying to establish itself and if you don't overfeed,,the filter material should not need cleaning.
Iwould not worry about cloudy water, cloudy water although unsightly will not harm the fish and it will clear on it's own as your tank continues to mature (cycle).
It is ammonia and nitrites that will be your biggest problem but if you perform water changes as suggested, and feed as suggested, at around four to six weeks..the tank will have cycled and then only once a week water changes will be needed.
When cycling with fish and no access to filter material from a friends tank, water changes will be needed each day if you wish for your fish to remain healthy.
I would resist the urge to use any chemicals in the tank except for the AMQUEL+.
Many so called cycle in a bottle products simply don't work and the less chemicals you use in your tank,, the better. IMHO.
P.S. I LOVE the catfish.
oh, I like the catfish. Looks prehistoric. I think they are very cool fisih.
