I personally just press them into the gravel (with my first two fingers and thumb around the roots to prevent injury)

I plant them a bit deep, and then pull it out until the roots are covered, but as much green as possible is above the gravel.

Agree. Make sure the crown is not buried.

The crown is the point where the leaf stems begin upwards and the roots downwards. It is white. If the crown is buried, the plant may rot at the base of the leaves. Redchigh's method is excellent to avoid this; the little pull upwards after planting just to the point where the crown is out of the gravel/sand is good.
