I need suggestions for filtration on my 125 gallon im setting up soon
Hey there. I had a 125 gallon i got on craigslist last christmas. I had set it all up and it was running great with the two canisters. i believe the models of the canister filters was a filstar xp3 and a fluval of some sort (all i know is it was rated around 55 gallons. It would have benn plenty good filtration for a basic tank but then one day i came home and about 20% of the water was gone from the tank. it had gone all into the carpet so i quickly drained the tank (no fishies yet fortunatly) I was led to believe it had something to do with either the filstar or the fluval but i was guessing the fluval cause it was older. I didnt take the time to check yet so the tank and filters and everything else has been in my garage since this happened like 4 months ago. I just moved and I think im about ready to give the tank another chance. I do however want to get new filtration systems just because its cheap insurance in the long run. I am hoping not a canister especially since the water has to go all the way down and back up, it sure seems like a lot of pressure on the filter and if it leaks again im totally screwed. i was hoping for a hang on power filter maybe dual power filters or possibly a sump though the sumps require drilling and im not really too excited about that. What are my options for this tanks filtration? maybe i could make my own filteration system? i was thinking maybe a small plastic tub that hangs on the back and a pool filter cartridge as a bio wheel. i donno give me some ideas? Help is appreciated
While im at it i might as well mention what my plans are for inhabitants:
I was origionally settion this up for an african cichlid tank (most likely haps and peacocks.)
though i was dicouraged by how hard it is to find decent quality bred cichlids. Online is my only option so i figured theres always other types of fish. I decided id start with some basic south american and central american cichlids such as the jack dempsey and green terror along with some differnt types of catfish, plecos, and of coarse a clown knife fish. I was also considering some red bellied pacus though they may get a bit to big for my tank. I could always rehome the fish one day if any of them outgrow my tank.
Any thoughts and suggestions of tank stocking ideas would be greatly appreciated!
