To Have Marrimo, Or Not To Have Marrimo
So my store is selling the Marrimo Moss Balls now, and they're really neat, plus I understand they are interesting and they kill other algaes. However, I read a review where someone said after a few months, it causes problems such as the algae "hairs" coming off of it and spreading all over the tank. Is it something I should get, or avoid?
I've never heard of that before...
I suppose it's possible, since Marimo balls are a form of algae themselves, but more likely than not they just had a small trace of hair algae on them and when they were transfered to a place the algae could thrive, it did.
Algae problems just mean there's too much light or nutrients, and the algae uses the leftovers.
Any type of stem plant would probably help, and many of them have low light requirements.
Anarchis and Hygro Difformis come to mind.
Well I have had 3 marrimo balls in a 125g for a year and a half now without any problems. One even sprouted a small baby marrimo lol. The only thing I would suggest is that every time you put your hand in the tank to clean, take a few seconds and turn them around so they dont become flat. Fish seem to like them and they add a little something to the aquascape.
I agree with redchigh for the algea. It doesn't come from the marrimo itself.
Good luck and enjoy them!
I have 2 in my 120g and 1 in my 5g. I like them a lot. I've never had a problem with algae growing on them, and l agree, they add a little something to the aquascape.
Okay, coo8-)l. I may get one then. Thanks for the input!
Odd that you said it popped out a baby one, I thought you just split them in two and the pieces clumped together into a round shape.
