Good Bye Big Bertha

I just had to make the difficult decision to get rid of my Gold Gourami known as "Big Bertha." She was attacking not only my other Blue Gourami but she was going after the Barbs, the Leporinus and the shark. That was a seriously crabby fish. Still, I feel very very bad. I have never been good at saying goodbye.

Sorry to hear that. What did you end up doing with 'her'?

She went to meet her maker. :-( I tried to find someone to take her but I couldn't. The store that sold her to me wouldn't take her either. She was obviously a fish that would have had to be housed alone forever. I pray I never have to make that decision again in my life, it is horrid. I cannot help but wonder if there wasn't something wrong with that fish. She was mean from the get go and almost seemed frenzied today. Just constant attacks on everyone. She has gotten progressively worse. I thought it was better to do that then to watch the rest get murdered one after the next. Still, it was a painful decision and I feel bad for her. She was a beautiful fish.

Well, as bad as I feel about Big Bertha, one thing is crystal clear. There is a sense of "calm" in the tank that has not been there for some time. The Barbs are much more relaxed and "Blue" the remaining Gourami is happily swimming all around the tank. This poor fish hasn't been able to more then poke his nose out of the bushes for fear of being attacked by Big Bertha. Everyone is just so ... Happy. I believe it was the right thing to do.

I'm sorry you had to do that Inga, but you did the right thing. Better to sacrifice one fish than the entire tank. She was a very pretty fish, but everything you need to know is right there in her eye. She has what I fondly refer to as "devil eyes". I have a Blue Diamond whose eyes have that same appeal. I'm glad the balance in your tank has been restored.

Thanks Kymmie, it wasn't easy and I am sure I will feel bad for some time. She definitely was devilish. I don't think she was happy either. I wonder if fish can be born with brain problems? I mean, could she be like a fishy sociopath? My fear is that one of the other fish that were peaceful under her iron fin rule will not try to take over the top position and it will start all over.

Same with people, same with fish, not everyone lands here with all their marbles. I'm sure there's a few fish here and there who are born with a screw loose. I'm sure everything will be fine in your tank, as my mom loves to say, "Don't borrow trouble", lol.

I'm new here, but was drawn to your story because I understand the need to remove a bully. I've been there. Sorry to know that no one would take Bertha off your hands, but it is great to read that your other fish are relaxing and starting to be themselves again.
