2 Month old Aquarium - major Algae growth help~
I recently acquired a new fish tank set up, 20 gallon tank, came with filter and heater. Set it up with 10 neon tetras, 2 corys, and 5 and 5 of two ofter types of Tetras.

Now I am down to 1 cory a 6 bigger tetra's. So many deaths. I have also had just a huge bloom of algae. Went on vacation for a week and came back, the tank was just COVERED in Alga!

I have been cleaning the tank weekly, changing 20 percent like the guy at the pet store told me. But I dunno.. seems "fishy" to me.

I am thinking of staring over, getting new gravel, new fish and new filter. Any thoughts on this?

I would recommend against the Chinese Algae Eater. They get pretty large. Otos would work for a 20 gallon as would cories, but they generally stay on the substrate. Shrimp are always good, I'd recommend cherry, rudolph red-nose, or amano shrimp, but not ghost shrimp. Snails are another option, but unless you plan on putting in something that feeds on them to keep them in check, you'd likely be spending a lot of time tryign to get rid of the snails.

I personally control algae with ramshorn snails, which are easy to acquire (generally stowaways on plants). The problem is that they reproduce like crazy, but they can be controlled with periodic trappings. That's just one idea. Another idea is to try a UV sterilizer, if you want to go hi-tech.
