I am new to this forum because I somehow overlooked it. Glad I found it. I have a 29 gal Biocube with protein skimmer, 28 lbs of fully cured live rock and live sand. The current occupants are a pair of clowns, a cleaner shrimp and a couple of snails and hermit crabs. The tank has been as is for about a month with no ammonia showing and very small nitrite and nitrate readings changing from day to day. I have also had the diatom bloom with a slight bit of the brown algae on a few things in the tank. My question is when do you call a system mature? I haven't found a great deal written about what I should see for my water readings having started with fully cured live rock, live sand and a protein skimmer and a light livestock load. So, what should I be seeing and what kind of water change schedule should I be using? Thanks.
Welcome and you have come to the right place.. first i would refer you to the member submitted articles in the saltwater section.. tones of great info there and as for mature it really depends on what you are looking to accomplish by defining that term.. IMHO i would say 6 months to 1 year, after this point you should have stable readings and a good routine down to keep everything going well.... i my self an not near this point yet but getting there LOL
again welcome and hope to hear ore about your tank (dont for get to post pix we love them here)
for starters you shouldnt have an amm or nitrite reading at all, and preferably a 0ppm nitrate reading if the tanks setup right and fed properly. youll see copepods and ampipods in good numbers hustle around the tank, which is a good sign. good coraline growth too. stable water parameters is prob. the most important out of pods or coraline. a mature tank is long past a diatom bloom. theres a difference between a cycled tank and a mature tank.
welcome to the forum.
