Moving with Fish?
I am moving soon and I was wondering how I should go about transporting my fish. I have a 10 gallon aquarium that I just got with some black mollies. Would it be safe to use one of these critter keepers http://tinyurl.com/2e39ltk to transport the fish in? Or could I lower the water level in the aquarium and just leave the fish in it? It is about a 45 minute drive to where I'm moving to.
Get a battery operated pump and put the fish inside and opaque or colored container with a top so the molly's can't see the outside. This to cut down the risk of stressing or spooking the fish or a better way is to get the fish to a local lfs to bag it and pump the bag with less water and a lot of oxygen depending on the length of your trip. Then wrap a wet newspaper around the bag and put it into a styrofoam box ( optional )
P/s : Don't feed your fish 3 days prior to moving.
Don't worry most of the fishes that are being transported to competitions overseas are moved this way and the mortality rate is low if done right.
Good luck =)
if it is only a 45 minute drive, I would keep it simple...a 45 minute drive is quite short and no need really to keep the pump running and bagging fish...(this is just my opinion though)
get two 5 gallon buckets from your local hardware store w/ lids (lowes sells them for $3).
Fill one bucket with your tank water and put your mollies in that.
Fill the other bucket with tank water and put your gravel, decorations and filter media submerged in the water.
when you get to your new place, first thing will be to get the tank set-up where you want it, add the gravel, decorations and re-assemble the filter. add your fish and you're set-to go.
I've moved my 55 gallon over 400 miles using this system and I haven't lost a fish :-)
100% agree with Johnny. This is the same method I used when changing over from a 55g to a 120g. The fish were in buckets for 5 hours with no problem. 45 minute drive willl be a breeze. Good luck.
=) wow they din't die??? maybe i worry too much that's why i go the extra mile to keep them safe in case it get too busy to set up the tank straight away after the trip or i get side tracked sightseeing on the way =p.
