Lake Victoria cichlid population recovering/evolution at work
I'm posting this in the general freshwater fish section as it may be of interest to hobbyists beyond the cichlid specialists. There is evidence that the rapidly-declining cichlid fishes of the rift lakes are now increasing, and scientists show how this speciation is evolution in action today.
good read.nice going and thanks for the extra info
interesting stuff. I used to be a population geneticist in a previous career, so its nice to have a little reminder of what i used to do
Well, that was a very encouraging read. The introduction of the Nile perch is one of those ecological blunders that really upsets me and it's fantastic to hear that cichlid species are recovering, adapting and even forming new species as a result of predation and environmental pressures.
