Plant identification, please?
Hi, the shop doesn't label the plants. Can anybody identify this plant for me, please?
Looks like water sprite to me.
Thanks. I'll do some research about it.
Yes, absolutely that is a species of Ceratopteris, probably Ceratopteris cornuta (Water Sprite) or C. pteridioides, grown rooted in the substrate. The former species is included in our profiles, have a look (click on the shaded name, or use the second tab from the left in the blue bar across the top to go to the Profiles section of the forum). This plant is a terrific floating plant, but will grow rooted in the substrate. From the leaf shape in the photo I suspect it may be C. pteridioides. C. cornuta is the most common, and there is also C. thalictroides but its deeply incised leaves are quite distinctive and the plant in the photo is not that.
Thanks Byron. I'd come across Ceratopteris cornuta through googling, but not the other one you mentioned. I'd found a picture described as cornuta which looked the same, but other photos looked different (people posting photos don't always seem clear on identification). Having the genus name is certainly useful, in any event.
When it comes to aquarium plants, which can be variable themselves depending upon growing conditions, it is very tricky to find accurate photos. Wisteria for instance grown under low light produces solid leaves, whereas the same plant under brighter light will have finely-divided pinnate leaves.
Yes, and young plants and older plants can look different as well (I'm assuming the same for aquarium plants as terrestrial ones).
Some of the pictures labelled cornuta seemed to be a very fine lacy-leaved plant which looked very different to mine.
I've become interested in adding more live plants to my tanks (after the ones I've already put in haven't died so I've been encouraged). It is quite difficult. You read a recommendation on here, then google it and find a heap of widely varying photos, then you have to try to pick it out at the shop where they don't label things (or probably not accurately, even if they do have a label). I've just been picking out things I like the look of and hoping for the best.... No doubt I'll have to pull things out or move them in due course (assuming they don't die....)
