Itty Bitty Sea Urchins???
So, I just saw these little guys crawling around this evening- they are so cute but I'm not sure if they are good guys or bad ones- and if they are good what are they and how do I care for them??

But, they are REALLY cute. About the size of a dime, if not smaller. And they move ever so slowly!!!

Either that, or my live rock has burrs.

sea urchins eat if your planning on having coral you might not want a large sea urchin in your tank. small urchins are ok but not in large numbers as they will damage the coral..

Depends on the Urchin. I dont know about that species but there are at least several that do not eat coral. Royals and pencil urchins come to mind immediatly and I am sure there are more.

well, I've asked around, and based on where the live rock was from, the LFS I got him from (who has also found lots of these) they are "rock urchins" and eat algae, including coraline but they don't do much harm intentionally until they become big and clumsy.

So I'm keeping them until they outgrow my tank. Then I'll sell them or give them to the LFS

Last night we found another one, so we have at least 3! LOL

very cool.. i have not read much about them at all, but they seem like they would be an interesting addition from such a small size...

They are very cool now that they are small- they clean algae and detritus off of their rock- and it seems that they are keeping the aptasia in hiding. At least, I saw one on their rock last night and haven't seen it at all today--- perhaps it knows I'm just waiting for it to open so I can juice it! lol

The guy at the LFS said they can get up to grapefruit sized as adults- sooo lets hope they grow SLOW-ly! lol

did they tell you these guys eat coral and cause it to bleach

thatg33kgirl 07-20-2010 05:13 PM

Yup- well, it depends on the *kind* of urchin, and since they are babies its hard to tell... but at least most of the ones from FL, which is where my live rock came from, are mostly algae grazers. They can and will eat coraline but, well, can't get mad at them for that I suppose!

lol yo will once they reach the size of grapefruits
