Help Hermes the Snail! (pic heavy)
I started dropping tums in the tank yesterday and I'm not expecting them to work overnight (I even took him out and put him in a dish wish about an inch of water and some tums to make sure the algae eater wasn't running him off them) but he looks worse! He's peeling and there's a lot of discoloration...some light spots and some dark spots that appear to be inside the shell so I'm worried he might have some kind of infection? Or is it just calcium deficiency?
I plan on getting him a cuddle bone tomorrow to see if that helps any too
Edit: Oh an I keep water temp at about 78-80 degrees but I don't know Ph, Kh, etc...need to invest in something to test this...and I do a 25% water change once a week...he eats algae wafers and whatever else he finds to munch in the tank
I don't see anything wrong with your snail in terms of discoloration. It seems perfectly healthy to me. Where's the peeling problem?
all the little cracks going through it...he did not have any of those when I got him :/
Those don't look like cracks to me, they look like growth plates, as snails grow they grow sections, they look like cracks, but they aren't, they're where the new part of the shell is growing in. They will go away eventually...
Your snail looks fine to me.
But some mystery snails only live a year, so don't get too attached!
A year or two and it depends on species of snails. Diffusas can live for a year or two but if you choose to allow them to live in temperature over 78 degrees, then you are easily shortening their lifespan. Canas can live an average of 5 years.
