high amonia

so i have a 55 gallon tank that has been fully cycled for nearly 3 weeks. in the tank i have 50lbs of lr, 3 damsels, a maroon clown, coral beauty and a six line. i have a seaclone 100 protein skimmer( i know people say its junk but it was free and better than nothin). but recently ive had high amonia levels that wont go away. ive tried a couple water changes but it goes to 0 and right back up the next day. is my protein skimmer that bad and cant keep up with the bio load or am i just missing something.

also i only feed them about 3 times a week.

What are your other water parameters and how long has the tank been setup?

musho3210 03-28-2007 05:18 PM

how much skimmate is being collected in the skimmers cup? Is it all watery or thick?

Also forgot, how often do you do water changes with and with what type of water? Its glad you know your skimmer isnt the best technology. But then free isnt bad either. :D

nitrite is 0 but nitrate just went up to 10ppm but i jsut did a 20 gallon water change last night. also i have a mushroom that i got on a peice of rock and he seems uneffected by any of this.

in the skimmer there is foam but ive got a tube commin out of the top into a bottle and thats all liquid and black as anything. but it is a mountain dew bottle so its makin it a little darker

musho3210 03-28-2007 05:34 PM

this one here, is there an expiration date on them at all cuz it is about a year old

usmc121581 03-28-2007 06:14 PM

I dont like them kits but most LFS test with them. Go to your LFS and have it testedand compare theres with yours and if they get different then get a new one. But what water are you using for water changes.

cp5041 03-28-2007 07:55 PM

i dont think my lfs sells RO water so i use tap water and let it sit for a day or two and then use water conditioner. i change about 20 gallons once a month
