Should my Crayfish have land?

Hey everyone, I just set up a 10 gallon tank for a crayfish(its got all the decorations, lava rocks, and plants from my established tank since I emptied it out) and I'm not sure if I should have land for him/her.

Most of the care guide I saw didn't say anything about land being necessary, but one that I just poked through mentioned them needing land if I don't have an airstone so that they can breathe?

Currently it's just a 10 gallon tank with an inch, maybe 2 inches max of a fine playsand, and it has a bunch of fake plants, and chunks of lava rock, as well as a few java ferns, some java moss, and some pvc tubes, all but the sand from an established tank.

Should I only have the tank filled some of the way, and have a rock mountain or something for him to climb out of the water?

Thanks for any help, couldn't really find a set answer on this.

they wont climb out of the water if land is present so your better off keeping it full of water.

airstones dont really put oxygen into the tank as much as they disrupt the surface tension of the water which allows for gas exchange.

Fair enough, he seems like he's been doing fine, was just one website I saw, their breakdown of crayfish care must have either just been wrong, or maybe there is a species of crayfish that is partial to land.

Some crayfish like to breathe air, I've had some climb up decorations to breathe air at the surface, so I made sure to put in a crab rope for them... Crabs do the same thing, they climb the rope to breath air at the surface.

It's not necessary though.

I had a blue "lobster" for awhile. I kept her in a fully aquatic tank, with white cloud minnows and mystery snails.

Very boring pet...
