Next door neighbor's motorcycle.
 

My next door neighbor has a motorcycle and the other day he had it in the driveway, running. Every few minutes he would rev the thing up and this lasted for an hour!! It's very noisy!! To anyone who has motorcycles, is it necessary to do this? I find it annoying as heck!

It's a uh... I can't say it here I don't think. At least it's only an hour. I have a neighbor that does laps on his crotch rocket at 3 AM every day. He says it's to warm it up before he rides in to work an hour away.

One consideration, when I do (rarely) play with my bike, and make alterations to the intake or whatever, I do the whole sit and rev thing. Sorry to my neighbors. lol

Well I would understand if he was working on the thing. My brother just bought a $300 motorcycle that appears to be held together with duct tape, its pretty noisey:-?. My car ATM is a noise violation cuz the exhaust went out at 6pm last night. It broke right behind the cat. converter:-(. I swear you can hear it coming from a mile away. So yeah sorry to everyone that I drive by... I'll fix it soon.

LOL i DROVE A 78 Ford LTD in high school. My dad was going to change out the exhaust but the holes didn't line up. It took all of five seconds to convince him to light it up and see how it sounded. I drove it like that for weeks. In deep east Texas that was to us what low riders and dice on the mirror are to others. I rolled up to school the next morning and even as I parked people were still looking around for the big honkin truck making all that racket.

Against the loudest of all the trucks, mine still won out.

If he was working on it for the hour maybe he was trying to balance the carbs and blipping the throttle occasionally?.I dont know what the regs are in the US,but in the UK the annual M.O.T checks require quiet exhaust noise (though personally I agree with the "loud pipes saves lives" motto,it would be anoying if a neighbour kept revving their vehicle non-stop for a period of time).
My bike has a standard exhaust and so is quiet,which does allow me to have good fun with young "boy racers" in their cars.Because they have a loud exhaust and bodywork styling kits worth more than the car is worth on their 1.2L vauxhall novas,they think they can beat my quiet bike in a race from the traffic lights :-P

This is so true. More than once I have nearly hit someone on a rice burner on the freeway because they were coming up at mach one speed, lane splitting. A guy on a loud Harley can split lanes and you can hear him a mile behind you. Still not sure I'd want to hear it revving in driveway for an hour, though.

When I was a kid our next door neighbor was a retiree. Early to bed, early to rise type of guy, but boy was he noisy! He'd be out working on his bike with all the requisite revving at sunrise, which is well before 6 a.m. at this latitude in the summer, and would mow his lawn with what sounded like a diesel mower right afterward.

I'm totally with you guys on the loud pipes thing, though I think another part of the issue might just be generational. The guys with the big hogs tend to be seasoned riders who cruise down the highways rather safely (if fast, but hey) while the younger guys on the Japanese bikes tend to be the types to weave around through heavy traffic just asking to have someone change lanes on them.

This guy is 65 plus years old with a wife around my age, 48-50ish.I don't think he was working on it. I don't know whether to say something directly to him about it or report it to our worthless homeowners' association board.

Be straightforward. That whole run to the nearest authority thing gets old and starts trouble. Next time, go say hi. Inquire into what he's working on. Ask about his bike. Then casually mention that you notice he does that a lot and that as loud as it is, you thought he must have been having some problems with it. Maybe that can segway into either understanding or a compromise.
