I have a 72 gallon fish tank. For a few months, I've been getting these little black (sometimes green) dots on the inside of my tank's glass. My pleco doesn't eat it. These dots was on one of my decorations so I took it to the petstore who said it was black hair algae. I did a search but the picture of a black hair algae looks like hair. These are little dots. I take my scraper and scrape it off. Is it possible that if I leave it alone, it will look like a hair?
Does anyone know what these little dots could be?
Sounds like it could be hair algae due to the dark color... but pictures would help for anyone to see it best. If you can please take a few and post them up here.
Also, I always check this site to get an idea of what i'm dealing with algae-wise:
Your description sounds exactly like green dot algae. The green is very dark, black even; if they remain as dots (although the dot will enlarge a bit) that's what it is. Black brush algae is quite different, it appears as tuffs of very dark green almost black, though technically it is a red algae.
The dot algae is common, though some tanks don't seem to get it. Nothing I know of eats it. A good aquarium scraper is needed to remove it. If left it can be hard to remove, sometimes requiring a razor blade, but be careful not to scratch the glass (and never use a razor blade with acrylic tanks). I find that if I run a stiff sponge scraper over the front (and maybe side) glass every week during the partial water change, it helps to keep dot algae from forming, but in my 115g (which is the only tank where I ever see it) some will get missed now and then.
i use an old store card to remove this.
i left mine to grow and see how long it would get.the weird thing is the water is very clear if they grow to that stage if not it's murky green .... a sponge will do.no scrappers needed.
