Beginner plants for a 10g
I am slowly setting up a vivarium for fire belly newts. I have never used live plants before, and it is all a bit over whelming.
What plants do you suggest for beginners? It is only a 10gallon, so it would be nice if they do not grow to monstrous sizes. And of course, newt friendly plants.
Also, should I have any special soil/sand/whatever under the pebbles to help root the plants? Do I need to add anything to the water to help them grow? And how long should I let them be in the tank before I can add newts?
How deep is your water? There are fully aquatic plants and others that are mixed.
Also, what is your pH? I have found that because I have high pH, there are only certain plants that grow well.
crypts and hygro ... as long as u have about 1 wpg ur fine
Were do you buy your plants. I am planning on doing something similar with my 36 gallon tank. Another question is I plan to grow the plants first then put the fish in it. Is that a good idea?
There is a nice selection of crypts that would work well, as well as anubias. As for the lighting for both, even if you get down to .5w/g, you are still on the safe side, as these grow fairly well in minimal lighting. Even java ferns do fine at that level. I have a 5.5G crypt and java fern tank, and only have 1 10W screw-in cf that's not all that great, and the crypts are flourishing, and the java fern has exploded in growth and putting out baby plantlets.
As for ferts, not necessary at these levels, and no CO2. Regular gravel will work just fine, as for the anubias and java fern could be tied to rocks, driftwood, or any ornaments. And the crypts would grow better if supplied a root tab about every 3 months or so.
Anubias is the way to go with a vivarium. It will grow immersed or emersed. Brazillian Pennywort is another good one that will grow out of the water and up onto the land. Lobelia is good too. That will actually flower.
java moss- very easy, almost fool proof
