bio load question
i will be taking down my 125 gal tank to install new floors and want to save two of my electric blues in a spare 20 gal for my new setup when I'm done. my other fish will be going to my lfs. i have two ehiem 2217 presently in my 125 and have a spare penguin 125 bio wheel i will be using for the 20 gal and want to take some of the bio load from the 125 and keep the 20 gal from cycling. I was wondering if by just putting the bio wheel in the 125 gal would work or do i need to run the filter in the tank? i don't really want to cut the tank lid to accommodate the penguin 125. The 20 gal tank will be a community tank for my daughters when i get the 125 back up and going the floors might take a month or so since I'm doing it myself and i work a ton. Thanks again

you might should cycle the 20g before putting expensive fish like that in a tank... this process can be sped up by putting water, filter, decor and substrate from your 125 into the 20

first off, electric blues can grow anywhere from 15-16 inches max and need plenty of swimming space, they may be small, but will eventually outgrow your tank. as for your tank, i suggest you cycle it, adding anything(mostly water) from your 125 will "seed" your tank and speed up the process. there are stress zyme's that can "instantaly" cycle your aquarium, but if i were you, i would just add stuff from your 125,run the bio ball in the tank and allow it to cycle, its best to be safe than sorry

fishy-mush--it sounds to me as if the 20 gallon is just temporary, soon the fish will be going back into their 125 which is plenty of room for them. Also, water contains very little beneficial bacteria---in order to seed the new tank, adding gravel and decorations would go a long ways (adding the used filter from the old tank would be best). Billy- I am a little confused, are you currently running your penguin in the 125g, or is it just sitting around somewhere? What filter do you plan on running in the 20 gallon once it is set up?
