Hello my name is Jay and i just got into the world of Cichlids i have had tropical fish all my life and i was looking for a fish with a little personality and individuality. after much debate i decided on a jewel, i was told that i got a male so i want to get him a female, he was very depressed at the pet store and i want to restore his confidence and color. how can i tell the difference between male and female..for all i know i might not even have a male now.
The fins will be more pointed for the males.
My fish is Depressed
my fish was in a tank with lots of other larger fish so i was told he would need TLC to get back to normal. i hear jewel's are very aggressive but mine is scared and very timid..is there any hope?
is he in a tank of his own?
what are his tankmates and what size of tank?
how planted/decorated is your tank?
because i was thinking that maybe he was uneasy with being in such an open space with nowhere to hide if theres not much there. im not much of a cichlid expert at all so these are only logical guesses. from what i do know however, jewels like their own company so if hes the only one perhaps this could be "depressing" him
What other species do you keep with the Jewel cichlid? One small fish among several large fish is a bad idea IMO. I would imagine how it feels to be with large living things that are rather intimidating.
I merged your two threads as both are discussing the same topic.:)
