my porcupine snails have grown since i bought them but the new part of the shell is a different color from the rest its not brittle but sort of steps down from the old shell what can i give them food-wise that will help shell forming this is important not just to the adults but to my multitudes of new babies
I think it might be caused by a calcium deficiency. There is a product you can add to the tank which I can't remember off the top of my head. I'll get back to you on this.
Calcium minerals as Kate stated. Neither do I remember what it is unfortunately but it appears what I had seen are liquid-based.:)
Definitely calcium deficiency. Malayan Trumpet Snails are also known to used up calcium a lot. I have cited this as an example.:)
Snail-strong liquid calcium.
An easier way to do to get them clacium and nutrients is to feed them Romaine Lettuce. It can be put in either raw of microwaved for 15 seconds. My ramshorns love it and when I use it the population really takes off. May be a good thing or might not be.
I feed my snails "snail jello" and they love it and it helps keep their shells strong and looking nice. My shrimp, cories, and fish love it too!
It is very simple to make. Here is the recipe if you are interested:
1 jar baby food (with 4% calcium)
1 packet knox unflavored gelatin
1 tsp. fish flakes (I add some spirulina flakes and crushed shrimp pellets too)
powdered calcium (I bought calcium pills from the pharmacy and just crushed a 1/2 one up in the mixture).
Heat baby food in microwave safe dish until hot, add unflavored gelatin and mix well. Then add crushed flakes and calcium. Pour into bowl and chill until set. Slice off a piece and drop in tank. It freezes well for about a month. If you can't find the calcium pills that is fine as long as you use baby food with 4% calcium.
i found a vegatable/calcium suplement in a health food shop its in a tablet form(like alge wafers)and everthing eats it should do the trick :D
