Driftwood and pH
Ok, I've searched through the forum and can't find an answer to my question. I know driftwood will lower the pH in my tank, but how long is this effective? Will it continue to lower pH two years from now or only as long as the tannins are in the water? Just a curiosity question. Thanks!
When I added my piece of driftwood, the ph dropped to about 6.8. I added the peice about 2 months ago and now the ph is right around 7.4, with zero chemicals added.
I clean my tank at 3 times a month = around every 10 days.
As long as there are tannins in your tank, the pH will remain low. The tannins are gradually removed via the use of activated carbon or series of water changes. Almond leaves and peat are good alternatives though the peat lasts longer than the former.:)
