Tank mates for threadfins
I am having a hell of a time picking what fish to add to my tank next. (20gallon)
I have 3 thread fin rainbow fish. Two of them (male and larger female) are a bit more aggressive than the other female. They swim into each other and chase each other.
I know I want some cories, but I was thinking I would add them last (unless there is a reason to add them next). I was going to go with Panda cories.
But I want another type of fish as well. Not a schooling fish per say...I was thinking maybe dwarf gouramis or Blue rams...but I have no clue how they would get along with my rainbows. And I can't seem to find much on what does well with thread fins. All I know is no fin nippers and not overly aggressive fish.
For a 20 gallons tank, don't get gouramis or blue rams. They may be peaceful but there are times when exceptions can be seen. These fish can nip the threadfins' long filaments. I would suggest getting Microrasbora or Boraras species.:) Others that will do well with the threadfins are cardinal tetras, neon tetras, glowlight tetras and hatchet fish. A few that came to my mind anyway.:)
I had tried them in a larger tank where several tetras, dwarf cichlids and praecox rainbows coexist but this is all done in a large tank where there is too much space for them to avoid pestering each other.:)
For some reason I thought tetras were nippy. Hm.
I was looking at the hatchets as well. Do you think the tank would be too crammed with 3 rainbows, 3 cories and then 2 hatchets?
I really don't want to cram them in there, but I want them in numbers that make them happy.
Neons can be nippy. However, my experience of neons is that they like the bottom half of the tank, and threadfins seem to refer the top. Actually, it's for that very reason I'd not get hatchets. Also, if your threadfins are getting aggressive with each other, then what you really need are.... More threadfins. Let them spread the aggression out a bit.
So get 6 threadfins (total), 5-6 panda cories. That's about it in a 20.
Could I get a different type of rainbow fish and they would all hang out? Like dwarf neons or something.
Oh, and my threadfins don't really go to the top of the water. They stick around the bottom/middle.
Yea, they go insane when I feed them.
I am sure I am feeding them enough. Well, I hope so anyway.
But they dart all over the place for the food and swim like mad men. Yet they never ever go to the surface for it.
And I am just feeding them a tropical power type food (can't remember what it is called)
I think the one is a bit stupid, she swims into her reflection a lot. :?
The one female is more of a bronze colour compared to the other which is more silver (male is pink!). I assume she is older...she is also a bit bigger. Would that be a correct assumption? And would that be why the male shows his fins to her more often (older = more fertile I guess?)?
:P Sorry for all the questions
