Please identify (floating plant)
So I bought these on craigs list, the guy said they were 'water lettuce', however, I have doubts, because the biggest ones are old, and look nothing like the water lettuce i've seen.
I was thinking some sort of salvinia, but it has roots... I was thinking salvinia because it has 'hairy' "cat-tongue-esque" leaves.
The plant structure appears to me to be the same as water lettuce, Pistia stratiotes. However, your plant is much nicer looking leaves:-), perhaps a hybrid species? Sorry, I don't know much about this genus and can't offer more although if I have a chance over the next few days I may find something in my references. But for the moment, I do think it is a Pistia species, or if not then something very close. It is not a salvinia in my opinion.
Here's a photo of Pistia stratiotes for reference.
Mine are nowhere near that large.
I've had mine for a month or so, and not only has it completely filled every spot there's not a lilypad or frogbit, it grows to fill the space every time I sell 40 frogbit on ebay, which is weekly.
They are about the size of a dollar coin. You can see the duckweed as a reference in the picture.
ahh, I see. Yeah no chains, I've only seen the up close leafs of salvinia, and they look more like that
