Sand and flourite substate
I'm about to set up my new 50g and want to do sand for the substrate.I have a bag of flourite left over from my 37g build and want to use it to help with nutrients.Would it be better to do a layer of the flourite with sand on top or mix it together.
If it was me, I'd put the flourite under the sand but only in the back of the tank.
Think about it- only root feeders get any benefit from flourite, and most root-feeders are background plants.
(Well, I guess some grass-like foreground plants are root feeders too... Maybe leave it out of the middle with flourite in the front and back.
Hmm. Maybe layer it?
I'm considering a soil setup covered in sand for my 50G. (lol after all of my complaints about it, my 5G finally stabilised and I have to trim it more often than my two 10G's put together.)
Keep in mind that no matter where you put the sand and flourite, the flourite will end up on top. So, if you want to see sand more than you want to see flourite, put the flourite at the back of the tank, as redchigh advises. Little particles fall down between big particles. The Brazil Nut effect.
Good thinking guys. That's why I'm glad to have this forum:).You also got me to thinking that doing the flourite in the back corners kinda like islands on each side with sand in the middle and front might look good. What do you think?
