Neon Tetras with large bellies
I have 6 neon tetras in my 10 gallon and they all seem to be developing large bellies. It isn't dropsy because the only part that has gotten bigger is just under their body where I would assume their stomach is. They all swim around and eat like normal with the exception of one who seems to be fond of swimming around inside of a pot I have in there. It'll join the school sometimes and eats like normal but will spend some time inside of the pot as well, could she be ready to lay eggs or something?
Is this something to worry about? Are my tetras just getting fat? I feed them twice a day with Omega One Freshwater Flakes.
My water parameters are also in ship shape.
Another note about the tetra that likes to stay in the pot; when the other fish swim by it'll come out and swim around with them but if they venture to far from the pot she'll go back to it. It's almost as if she's protecting it.
Unless they are showing signs of illness, such as not eating, trouble swimming, being lethargic, etc. I wouldn't worry about them. They might all be females and can be getting full of eggs, that won't pose a problem or they are just chubby and love eating. As for the one tetra that strays away from the group. There probably isn't anything wrong with him. I have one black phantom tetra that swims on his own and then rejoins his group. Maybe he/she's more of an independent fish :) Sometimes fish will fight for dominance in their school and when one loses a fight he/she will wonder off for a bit and mope, then they usually join the group again as a subordinate member of the school. So again, watch for signs of illness, but otherwise, I think you just have happy healthy fish.
Have you seen them pass waste recently? They could be constipated which could result in bloating. Is there any way you could post some close-up photos of them? That might shed some light on the situation. They might just be well-fed or eggbound.
