Ich and raising temps/salt
I noticed my black molly had white goop all over his face and fins. My first reaction was to get store bought something to fix it. But I remembered someone on here mentioning slowly raising the temp and putting in freshwater salt to cure the ich. Within an hour the spots were gone. It is now day four and I've raised the temp to 82 degrees, incrementally over several days. All the fish are acting as normal as ever and my black molly is spotless now.
Should I continue raising the temp for a few more days then let it bake off the cooties? How much longer should I continue this process after everyone is symptom free?
Also... Before I saw any symptoms I took some gravel and plants from the infected tank and put it in my new fish free set up to jump start the cycling. Should I treat this tank as though it has ich as well, just to be cautious?
Continue the temp regimen, salt bath or medication at least three days after you can find no Ich encysted on any fish
Hope this helps:-)
Would not continue to raise temp much past 84 degrees.Have used salt at one tablespoon per five gallons with livebearer's with ich and temp of 82 degrees F and simply kept salt at this dosage for two weeks.
With mollies,I might leave the salt content as is after treatment.
With other fishes,I would perform small daily water changes at the end of two weeks to remove the salt.
Plants would not appreciate the salt and I might keep them in a bucket or tub of dechlorinated water during treatment with some lighting, or simply replace them.
