New to forum and Fish
I've been keeping fish for about three months now. It began as a homeschooling project for my kids, so they could keep journals about the growth of the fish and plants. It took only two weeks to discover my plans and ideas were much bigger than my ten gallon tank. Through a series of trades I've managed to get a 55 Gallon tank. I'm now outfitting to be a permanent fixture in my living room. (or as permanent as it can be considering we move quite often)
Our current guests are two guppies, three mollies, five platy, and three cory. Interestingly we only had the five platy and cory's to start but my neighbor saw me with tank supplies and offloaded her survivors on me. After they detoxed for a week in a small tank they joined our fish and all are happy but need more room.
My kids and dog also became enamored with the fish. The dog, so much so that he ate our first fish when I left the top open. Lesson learned. Now he sits and watches them for doggy hours, which still equates to several minutes at a time. The kids like feeding the blood worms and snacks to the fish and often bet on which of their fish will eat the most.
For the 55 tank I'm taking my time putting together the set up and am manufacturing much of the parts myself. (Nothing mechanical). Today's project is a plexiglass canopy. The glass one scares me with two rambunctious boys, a fat cat, and a giant dog all waiting to toss something heavy in the wrong direction. Additionally, it is a hand me down with unneccessary holes and cutouts.
Anyhow, that's how I came into fish keeping. I hope to learn a lot more. Our next house is going to be huge and I plan on getting a whopping huge tank to keep in my office.
Welcome TexasTanker, glad to have you join us! Your household sounds quite lively. Isn't it amazing how one teeny tiny tank can spur us to go bigger, larger, faster?? :-D
One small tank has morphed into two small tanks, a large tank and a terranium like thing to grow live plants for later transplant into the large tank, with plans, designs, trades and gimmes all lined up. I'm trying stuff out on a whim and coming back later to learn what it's called. Of course the store I go to is very knowleagable but I'm fairly certain they think I'm an idiot cause I come in looking for something and have to draw a picture and I call everything a "deal" or "like thing" (see above). Hopefully this will curb my info leeching off the store lol.
Welcome to TFK!
With any luck, your blossoming interest in fishkeeping will flower into full-blown addiction. At that point, this forum becomes less of a help desk and more of a support group.
Hi and welcome. I'm glad that none of my other pets has shown the slightest interest in getting at my fish. I hope it stays that way.....:-)
can i have a hug please,or is it medication time.;-)
hello and welcome.
hope you'll be happy here.
Welcome Texas Tanker :)
That is a pretty cool thing you have going on there with the gravel!!
Lainey you crack me up! (Although it is sad but true ROFL!)
Thank you all. It would seem this has become an addiction. I've even decided to quit smoking so I can free up the funds for more projects. Looks like one addiction has won out over another. I hate dividing my time lol.
My plans keep altering. I've swapped and bargained my way into having only the 55 gallon, and two sixteen gallons and a ten gallon hospital tank.
My before and after over just one month is delightful. The second picture is dated still. There have been tons of plant additions to this tank, a second divider, a second filter, and the hospital tank is almost in place below this one.
I'm also going to have pics up soon of the two small tanks. Fantasy is the theme for them. YAY!!!
Pretty soon people are going to start mistaking Texas for the Amazon river!
