priming issues with magnum hot 250 filter =\

i got a used marineland magnum h.o.t. 250 filter...was already starting to regret it (due to choice), but figured it would be fine once it arrived and i had it running...didnt come with instructions so im not sure if im missing something...

seems im having problems FULLY priming it...its missing a clip on one of the hose clamps, so its sitting staggered about 2-3mm on the edge of my tank (because thats where it rests on the edge of the tank)...the leveler on the bottom of the canister is fixed so its not leaning perfectly upright on my tank...

i filled it with water and plugged it in and there is flow so the impeller and motor are good......but i can see through the housing and notice that only about 25-30% of the canister is being filled/absorbed with water...all gaskets seem to be fine...anything im missing?

any help would be greatly appreciated! i just wanna get it started and running

I do not have a 250 H.O.T., I have a 350 Magnum...but the actual cansiter filter is the same I believe....

your missing clip may or not be causing the problem.

when I prime mine...I fill it up half way with tank water and turn it on untill water starts to flow into the housing. It will only fill up about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way....then You shut if off and you'll see a massive amount of air bubbles come flowing out of the intake(inside the tank)....this is the filter getting the air out of the filter..as the air is being released, it should then fill up with water to the brim and then you turn it back on and should be good to go!!!!

if that sounds too confusing...since you lost your directions, I took the libert of finding them online for you...

here's the "quick set up" phamplet that came with my 350, should be mostly the same::

hopefully this'll help you out!!

thanks guys! what johnny said worked perfectly! except in my case, i had to do it about 5-8 times, but either way, great advice! ;-)

another question now that its up and running, i was wondering if you guys ever modified the output pipe/tube to extend a little more...i fully realize that marineland purposely made the output so short to promote surface agitation, but man, is it noisy! anyone else ever found it to be annoying/loud?

JohnnyD44 05-09-2010 06:45 PM

you could try raising your water level to minimize the surface disruption....i have a magnum 350, and I sometimes find myself checking to see if it's still running because its so quiet!

yeah, unfortunately for me, the "window" isnt very big...either i really fill my tank TO THE BRIM and the output is just under the surface...or i leave the level i normally leave it at (which is already pretty high) and its noisy splashing all night...*sigh* id hate to give up a filter just because of its agitation noise...maybe its off to home depot in search for some universal pipes for me after work...
