new experience..very fun :)
well(look in my signature) as u can see i have 3 platies and the one blue spotted female was very pregnant and 2 days ago she had her batch of fry which was very exciting to me because i never had platy fry...do platy fry grow quicker than guppy fry?
i just lost 2 guppies in 2 days so i have 2 males left so i dont have to worry about anymore guppy fry...unless my guppy fry choose to breed but for right now everything is quiet.i might get a molly just to see how the fry grow and im going to see which ones grow faster and the ones that grow faster i will choose to keep in the tank and the other ill give away.i have it all planned dont worry. dont tell me im overstocked cause i hear it from alot of ppl plzz. thatnk u and reply and tell me something about mollies or platies.
I love platies.
Anyways onto trying to give answers to your questions.
In my personal experience my guppy fry typically grow a bit faster than my platy fry.
But none of my fry are really getting too big so idk what I'm doing wrong so this example could be useless.
My balloon molly fry tend to be about 1.5-2x the size of my platy fry at birth. My balloon molly fry seens to be growing the same rate as my platy fry, though. So mollies may grow slower, but already have the advantage from the beginning though.
And grats on the bumblebee. :)
thx i really want a balloon molly but im not sure how big they grow? can u help me out there? how many babies do they have? do they get along with platies and guppies? and do they eat platy or guppy fry?how do u know if they r pregnant?
Balloon mollies get about 1.5-2 inches I believe. It looks like online it says 3 inches but mine haven't gotten that big before. The one I have with my angelfish (had it about 4-5 years) is about 2 inches I think and it looks HUGE to me. Maybe it's really bigger. 2.5 inches?
Anyways, they usually have about 20-30, but really big ones, can have maybe 50+ probably. It's just like guppies and platies. They are pretty similar. Mine get along fine with platies and guppies. I've had one that was somewhat aggressive before, but she calmed down. They aren't anymore aggressive than platies/guppies. (maybe a tiny bit more since they are larger, but not really)
They are just like guppies and platies. They eat any fry whether it be their own or guppy/platy fry.
It's kind of hard to tell if they are pregnant because they are naturally fat looking, but you'll know when their belly gets even bigger. Also if you look down from the top of the water, their lower belly will be getting larger as they get further along on their pregnancy. (just like guppies and platies)
oh thank u so much.so u think i shoud get a balloon molly with my 5 gal tank if i take out all the fry?
i keep finding fry in my tank!!!!they r from the same batch of my blue spotted platy adn i just keep finding one every day!! and shes not even prego anymore!
It looks to me like your 5 gallon tank has enough fish in it... I wouldn't recommend another. If you happen to lose a female platy ever or something you could try the balloon molly.
Edit: Just reread what you said. The fry don't really produce much waste unless you feed your fish extra to make sure the fry grow... In that case you might be able to fit a balloon molly. Still I think it would be too many even w/o the fry.
Your should really take all of those babies to the petstore if they allow fry( One of my Local fish stores does) since your tank is overstocked as it is. YOu can try upgrading to a 10 or maybe 20 gallon if you have enough money and room and/or use that as a extra tank or for a fry tank.
i dont have enough plugs in my room but im just gonna get rid of all the fry when they r 6 months or maybe less. i will just keep one of each maybe two depending on how they look. then i will get the balloon molly. i will ask if they will take them earlier but i doubt it cause they told me 6 months. some fry r getting eaten which is good cause now there r less fry maybe about 20 left.
ok one more of my guppies died so im down to one male guppy and 3 platies and u know the fry... well at least the tank is becoming less overstocked..i took out the breeder net and released all the platy fry in the main tank and i think it was a bad idea because i dont see that many platy fry anymore. but i dont mind my tank is getting less populated
