Question about a "nursery tank"
About a week ago the Mickey Mouse Platy I bought from the LPS had 23 fry. Luckily I had a breeder box or all of them might have been gobbled up. She ate three or four who didn't swim down fast enough. I don't want to keep them in the box for much longer because it's small and there are 23 little fish that need room to grow. I bought a 10 gallon tank today and a foam filter that is currently running in my established tank. How long should I let it run before putting it in the new tank, and after I put it in the tank how long should I let it run before adding the fry? Any advise would be much appreciated.

You'd need it to run fro a few weeks to get all the good bacteria in the foam of your little filter. Do you have any foam from your main filter that you could tie on to your little one to speed up the process? That would help significantly. With fry, waterchanges are benificial. So you'll need to do them to keep ammonia etc. down in the small tank and to help your fishies grow.

Unfortunately, no I don't have any foam from the main filter. The foam filter isn't very little, either, it's for a tank up to 25 gallons. The established tank is also a ten gallon (I don't have room for anything bigger. Finding room for the second one was a nightmare) so I do weekly 10% water changes anyway, and keep a very close eye on the ammonia and pH and whatnot. Keeping the breeder box clean has been a big challenge because it's such a small space. I can't wait for them to go to their new tank, mostly so I won't have to clean that little box again.

The new sponge, soak it in the 25G tank filter so it will get some bacterias, you could transfer some of the 25G water to jump start the new aquarium. Make sure you do keep one fish in it until you are ready to transfer the fry's.

You might want to do more water changes than 10% weekly for the new fish tank with the fry. Also consider it for your current 10g.
