too hot in my apt.!

Hi all,

I've got a 12 gal. tank w 2 adult mollies, 1 "teenager", and several fry. I'm in an apt. bldg. and don't have total control over my heat. In this inbetween season when some days get hot, the apt. gets really hot. The tank is not in the sun and I havne't had any cooked fish yet, but I'm concerned.

Sometimes I open the "hatch" when I think it needs to cool off, but I really need a better solution bec I'm not always home.

Ideas?

TIA
NIna

How hot does the water get? It would be a good idea to monitor and track the temp fluctuations. Mollys can do well up to low to mid 80's. Is there a heater in the tank? Setting the heater to hold temp up at 80 - 82 will also lessen the drastic rise and fall in temp, which is what is most harmful.

Small water changes with room temp water, air stones with a control valve to control air flow, and a desk top size fan that blows over the surface of the water (with tank cover open) can all be effective and safe ways to cool water temp and restore oxygen content to the water.

The things not to do are adding ice, floating frozen ice bottles, adding cold water, or excessive water changes.
