Worried-> Inactive Apple Snail
I've had my golden mystery snail (or Apple Snail) since November, and he has always been really active. For the past couple days he hasn't moved all night. "Snuggie" is quite a large snail, about 1.5 " across. Is this the end of old Snuggie? Is there anything I can do for him?
(FYI, ph is 8.0, no other readings.)
I had a mystery snail that I had for only 3 months and it died.
it was about the size you mentioned.
Poke him and see if he retracts into his shell, if he does, he's alive! If not, he may be dead.
Mystery snails don't have the greatest life span, thank goodness their cheap! You can touch him to see if he moves. This might sound unappetizing, but if you take him out of the tank if they are dead they tend to have a fishy smell to them. That is a sure fire way to tell if he is dead.
I poked him last night and he retracted, I haven't yet today. He's just lying there with his trap door slightly open. I'll check him again tonight. In the meantime, I bought a new little snail to be his replacement.
lol already have the replacements ready... tis ashame...
I have a tank that had no fish in it, only live plants, that had a snail explosion... they are my replacements for the main tank... hehe... well also snacks for other fish...
What is the temperature of your tank? The warmer the water, the faster they can age. If I were you, I'd keep it steady to at least 74 degrees Fahrenheit. 1.5" is still young to me unless the snail is already stunted. Most pet chain stores have substandard maintenance that usually the snails you get from them, are bound to weaken eventually. Your best source would be your local breeders.
My tank is at 79 deg F, and he was a petstore snail to begin with. As soon as he got to my tank, he put on at least 3/4" of shell. He did pass away.
Sorry to hear about your loss :(
I like snails

That's too warm for apple snails. Sorry to hear that.
The temperature doesn't *seem* to bother them, my current snail and my last one two were very active and din't appear stressed. I'll definately keep the temperature in mind for future set ups.
