Reliable Digital Thermometer?
Hey all, I'm looking to get a digital thermometer for my tank, but I'm not sure which ones are any good.
What do you recommend? (10g tank)
From my experience, the ones you stick on the outside of the tank (which I believe are what you mean by digital) are often unreliable. The thermometers that you float in the water and attach to the glass with a suction cup are much better because they are accurate. I have tanks with 2 or 3 of the stick-on that read different temperatures, but when I compare the 2 floating thermometers I have with the built-in digital thermometer on one of my Eheims, it is identical.
If a few degrees don't make a difference, the stick on kind are fine.
If you need to be precise, get a glass one and avoid cheap brands, they are often inaccurate because they are assembled poorly. Check several identical ones in the store to make sure they read the same temp.

hi Byron, by digital I mean the one's with a temperature probe that use a battery, and have a digital display :)
I currently have a stick-on glass one, that sits outside the glass, and I feel like the temperature is not very accurate.
It gives me a reading of 74-76, but when I put my hand in the water, it certainly feels colder.
I have one from zoo med. It's a digital thermometer, with a digital display and it's really small. I bought it for $10-14 at a local fish store. It's accurate and it small and just sits in the corner of my discus tank. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Oh and it has a blue face to it, just incase you're looking for a picture of it online.
Thanks, I'll take a look :)
I just saw one on the web from my LFS and it was approx. $20 canadian. I never really did look at them until you did mentionned it. Thanks.
I have a Marina digital thermometer that I just set up and I"m not to sure of its reliability. But it did occur to me, to test and maybe even use the same digital thermometer you can use for humans in taking our temperature; those thermometers need to be reliable and are cheap. The negative of the digital thermometer designed for"humans" is that you need to hold it until the temp registers, usually less than a minute, often less than 30 secs; but if you can live with that, the digital thermometer used for humans may be the way to go.
All drug stores carry these as well as Wally World, Superstore, etc.
My brother use this Fish Tank Thermometer which Display temperature inside and outside of aquarium tank simultaneously. But my friend suggested another Aquarium Thermometer which just need several dollars. Temperature Measurement Range between 0°C ~ 50°C (0°F ~ 100°F). Don't know if you like one of them.
Here is a link to the Digital I wish I had bought
I was having problems with a new heater I bought and I initially didn't trust my Marina digital, but I now feel it is reliable. However this is the one I would purchase instead today, I like that it has an audible alarm if your temperature dips down to far or up to far. I think I may purchase this soon anyway, its slightly cheaper in the States:
This is another option I considered, I'm a bit of a lazy sot and this would allow me to put a sensor in the kitchen and the bathroom I use most frequently so I wouldn't have to walk over to the tank:
