Switch to African cichlids

hey all,

i have been keeping central and south american cichlids for a while now and they are starting to become boring. most of them get to big for home aquariums and are too agressive. im thinking of switching over to african cichlids. i understand that they need different water chemistry and all and i got all that covered. my tank size is a 55. my ph is going to be around 8.0 to 7.5. let me know if this is a bad idea. ive heard that africans are far more agressive than their american cusins. i just love their coloration and how active they are. its fun to see them biker over food during feeding time. i want to start out with a pair of electric yellow labs ( hopefully i will get a male and female). i have an idea of what to put with them but im not sure so can you guys give me some ideas as in compatible tankmates( perferably other cichlids. thanks for your time. sorry for the grammar, i was kinda in a rush lol http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/fo...lies/smile.gif

Your PH would be ok for The africans cichlids. They like it any where from 7.6 to 9.0.
I wouldnt do a pair of them as male/female. They will breed every 3 weeks.
Have 30 to 50 fry at a time.
But i would do one of each Of the following.
Yellow lab
Kenyi
Auratus
Red Zebra
Maingano
Here is a web site you could look at to see more of a selection.

Thanks i really and might only have species tank with electric yellow labs. I read that they are low in numbers so i wanna breed them. I feel like im doing somthing. ive bred convicts before i think they are the easiest new world cichlids to breed. here is a pic of my 55 which my africans are going to be in. is the aquascape suitable for the yellow labs? let me know what you all think! thanks for the advice! :)

How many labs are you wanting to put in there?
If you are wanting to breed them. I would do 1 male and 3 females.
I would add Some more decor. But the rest of it looks ok/

im in the process of getting moer bricks i gotta watch the ph jus in case it pulses up. i think i would like to breed yellow labs but im not aiming for it jus yet. im still laerning about african as they differ from their american cusins. there are some things to get used to. i love how im able to put up to 15 or 16 of these amazing fish in my tank. with new world cichlids, most of them get huge so its hard to find a tank big enough for multiples of them. ill post some pics of the final out come when im done with my tank. im starting to hate that ugly picture i posted up there lol :)

I wouldnt do more then 200 Lb of brick.
Maybe Go to a lawn and garden store and get some rocks And stack them up high.
Then some driftwood. The cichlids would like it better then the bricks.
