Guppys eat fry most?
Anyone know which fish eats fry most often? Guppies, mollies, platies, or swordtails?
My red wag platy gave birth last night in the tank while I was asleep and I've only caught 3 fry so far. (She was only 25 days in I wasn't expecting more fry... I almost put her in a breeder box too. :x) I saw a 4th one. But this guppy was chasing it to death. Literally hunting it down.
This guppy of mine, scours the bottom of the tank every time I know there's fry in the tank! It checks between the plants and the gravel for the babies...
I feel like this guppy is evil, lol. The 4th fry it chased several times but it disappeared. Not sure if it got away. :/
But ya, this fish seems determined to find and eat every last fry.
Also I think my male guppy fry is searching around constantly as well. But he's smaller (one of the fry I got from the pet store. He doesn't even have his gonopodium yet even though hes pretty big.) So, I think the fry have a better chance of getting away. Not as worried about him.
Anyways, to the question mostly... Are some fish more inclined to hunt for fry than others? Are guppies more evil than platies and mollies? Think this is just my imagination?
Lemme know what you think/know! :)
well...some of my male guppys would just ignore some fry and then some of my other males were, as you say "evil" but the worst fish in my opinion are platys...mine are constantly chasing fry until they catch them, they would stop :):):)...but i hope this helps...and my female guppys never seemed to bother :)
My guppies chase the fry only for about a second and the fry are so quick that the adults give up. I have just as many now as I had a week ago. In the past when I had swords and platies, I would lose almost all of the fry. Guppies seem to be the least interested in canibalism in my experience.
i never saw my swordtails eat fry.but my guppies yes!! alot!! my one male doesnt really care about em.he just ignores it. the red one i have is an evil little thing he eats anything that goes to him.he doesnt leave it alone! if it hides he waits there waiting for it to come out.sometimes he goes away and then comes back to check it out
I guess it must just be the fish individually. My platies don't seem as interested in hunting one particular fish down than some. :X
Not sure, I've only ever had guppies, and usually it's the other fish that eat the babies in my tank.
But I wanted to share this because I thought it was hilarious. But sad. But hilarious.
:( I've seen that video before.... my platy gave birth and ate it like 5 seconds after. D: It reminded me of this vid. Sad.
