Ok, so there's all this brown stuff growing in my tank, it appears to be algae. The tank has been cycling for a little over two weeks now, I'm still waiting for the ammonia level to go down. Just fyi, I am cycling with fish. Am I Ok to get an algae eater or do I need to wait until the tank is fully cycled? I'm sorry I don't have a pic...I'm fairly certain that the growth is algae.

I'm glad you asked Kevilknc. I have this algae too. I think I read that there are good and bad kinds. Which is which fishfolk? Is there anything we should be doing to get rid of it? I'm sure you want some growth but how much is too much? At this point I can still see the fish so that's good. 8) Dee

Algae Eaters:
Amano shrimps-prefer filamentous algae
Chinese Algae Eater-only juveniles
Siamese Algae Eater-prefer hair algae; 20 gallons minimum
Bristlenose-needs 15 gallons minimum
Otos-sensitive to water chemistry changes; best to buy when tank matures by 4 months
Livebearers-not advisable unless you have fish that can eat fry

For a 10 gallons, settle with otos but do more research before buying them and ensure tank is matured.

Kevil, pls make sure none of your fish will eat Amanos. Amanos are quite small and easily eaten by other fish.

Too bad, my 5 cm bamboo shrimp was eaten by my angelfish. :omg:

ok, so it sounds like I need to get some amano shrimp. now my tank is only ten gallons, and I have five zebra danios in there currently. Will the shrimp cause the tank to be overstocked? And will the danios eat up the shrimp?
