Pregnant platy?? Do I put her in the net now?
I've had this platy for about 2.5 wks and she's gotten much fatter. Now she's kind of resting on the bottom of the tank and hiding behind the castle and in the plants. I have watched several birthing videos and she looks larger then all the fish that were giving birth in the videos. So, should I wait and see if she gives birth to her first, then put her in the birthing net? Should I put her in there now? Should I let her have all of her fry, then try to find them and put them in the net? How should I get them in the birthing net? I'll try to take some pics of her also so you can judge for yourselves! Thank you so much!
Here's one more picture. She's the one closest to the camera.
yea shes pregnant but she might have a week and a half or less
Yay!! I can't wait!! I'm still waiting on my black Molly to give birth. I think she's close, but I just don't know. I removed the male balloon molly and he was re-homed and she seems less stressed, but she also seems HUGE and often "sits" on the aquarium floor, along with the platy. I guess it's just a waiting game...a very impatient waiting game!
Waiting is the hardest too......I have found the breeding nets/traps to be stressful on the females and can cause premature births due to poor water flow and decreased water quality, I like to have lots and lots of plants especially floating plants for the mother and then fry to hide in...hornwort, water lettuce, duckweed are my choices with my livebearer..not just for hiding places but for the micronutrients they provide for the fry, I also like to have bushy stem plants as they seem to like to be at the top or bottom at different stages of growth and development....depending on why you are breeding or letting the fish reproduces, (profit or hobby) I like to let things happen naturally as long as I give both mother and fry a fighting chance for survival...some are going to get eaten and for me I accept that as part of survival and natural selection..... usually the weak or deformed go first and this give the strong and healthy a better chance......
I have found water quality plays a big role in who survives as well and it can even help the mother give birth to stronger fry that will have a better chance...being dropped fully formed and ready for life......
NOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!....never move the female of any fish...this could cause stress and possably make her miss-carry :):):)
did you want to keep all the fry ?
breeder nets can cause rather a lot of stress.
i used to let some of mine give birth in the main tank, then catch the fry
and placed them in a breeder with moss to hide in,just to bring them on a little.
others i left in the tank with plenty of places to hide and they made it too.
i want to keep the fry when my female has fry so i allow her to have the fry in the tank then scoop them up and put them in a breeder net :):):)
u r so lucky u have some time in ur house to kill and catch them all. i have track so i get home at around 6 pm and the babies could be eaten for all i know!
I will watch for the fry and then scoop them up! Thanks for the imput! Oh by the way, how should I scoop them? A cup? A net?
