What you're NOT told when you buy your 1st home
See when you buy your first house you get told many helpful (or not) ideas from just about anybody & their brothers & sisters....We bought our house pretty exactly 1 year ago with a small lot (2.5 acres) which was "natural" 2.5 acres  meaning weeds where taller then me trees that are some 100+yrs old that broken down etc.....not the "show case" type property with pretty flowers and things us gals like.....
While we had a lot machine help with Tractors and Backhoe's and what not a lot still had to be done by hand which I did 7 days a week about 12-14hrs/day all last year....Well and just in the past few days here I been going at it again working out there.....
So what I'm trying to warn new home owners about is nobody tells you just how much back breaking work a "natural" property this size REALLY is!!!
Its 4PM here now and if there'd not be a bunch other stuff that needed taking care of I'd drop dead in bed right about NOW
PS Alternatively next time around I think i'll be super rich and just hire a BUNCH people that can rip everything up and then how a full blown crew to come in and landscape for me ~ And all I will do is POINT what I want where
Lol don't we all wish we could be rich? :) I won't be looking to buy a house for a couple years, but thanks for the advice! That really stinks that you have to do it all by hand! :(
If you go and buy a big D9 Caterpillar dozer I'll come run that bad boy and mow everything in sight down. I get the chills just thinking about it. Full throttle smoke blowing Cat diesel global warming making mean machine (Tim 'the toolman' Taylor grunting)
Why would you want to bulldoze the trees? If you live in the woods, you don't have any grass to mow. Woods > lawns.
Because they are there and I'd have a dozer to play with. I wouldn't doze them all. Maybe an extra acre or two.
Wood = snakes, snakes = bad
We dozered some parts down, some parts really had VERY sick trees on them/ very old half fallen trees. But now I sit here and have a uhm 20ft long and maybe 10ft tall pile of tree crap I need to get burning - Any good advise how to best burn trees that been laying down for 1 yrs now?
We pretty much cut around all the old nice trees that are healthy, kept them, cut the rest out. Then there's a ridge at the end of the property which the last uhm maybe 1/4 acre gets so steep that most trees will stay there. I'll cut some lil stuff out by hand to clean it up some, cut out 3 pine trees (cause I don't like pine at all) and then that's it. Worst then the trees is the honeysuckle here that really TOOK OVER any old fencing, trees, shrubs and whatever used to be here 100's yrs go and that stuff is a PAIN in the rear to get rid of.
Snakes aren't TOO bad here mostly black snakes & garden snakes which is alright. The handful copperheads I met on my property last year - Not so cool but I slipped away so far w/out getting hurt - But when I found a nest with lord knows how many copperheads I went target practice with rat shots in that spot half the afternoon lol copperheads scare me.
Snakes won't bother ya. They're more afraid of us than... check that. There's some freaking out over snakes that people do. Snakes are really cool once you get to know them. They keep pesky rodents down. Like mice. Now those creatures I hate.
