beginer setting up 30 ltr tank
I've just jointed the forum and would like some advice please on setting up my tank. I've been reading variuos posts over the last week to try and get some basic understanding.
I have a tank that most of you hate. I have a 30 litre biorb but the kids love it so I'm going to stick with it. I've kept gold fish in it for 2 years and am now converting to tropical. I've cleaned the tank out and am starting from new.
I've got the filter media, water and heater in at the moment. They have been going for 2 days. I was going to use the fishless cycle using shrimp (or prawn as its all that is available in England). Can you please advise if this would be a good method for me?
I have a water testing kit and was going to add my fist fish once it had settled down.
I have already chosen a male beta from my local pet shop. I've read on the forums that harlequin rasbora's would be compatible. My question is, would I also be able to have some neon tetra's. The shop said I could have 1 betta, 5 rasboras and 5 neon tetras. I asked if I could add 3 of each and they said they liked to live in a community of a few so 5 would be better. I'm worried that this may be too many. They are a Koi specialist and have just started doing the aquariums so they may not have the experience in that field. They are definitely not trying to get money out of me as they have already spent allot of time with me over the past 2 years with very little revenue.
Thanks in advance
I'm not sure how many gallons 30 liters converts to, but the rule of thumb is 1 inch of adult fish per 1 gallon. Neons and rasboras are schooling fish. They need to be in a group of at least 5 or 6 per species. without a group of that size, they lose a bit of social structure and it can cause problems. I had neon tetras bully and nip when I had only 3, got 3 more and the harmony returned. I'm sure someone on here can help with converting the sizes. Best of luck!
As long as filtration is good and you do a 10% water change weekly you should be fine with the betta and the 10 other fish. I'd suggest adding the neons first, then the rasboras and last the betta. If you add the betta first he will claim the entire tank and depending on the individual you may have an issue.
