Stocking help

I'm not sure where to post this, but so my mom went out and got a 10gal halfmoon tetra aquarium with the 2-10i whisper filter and heater (preset at 78Degrees F). Its set up with hot pink gravel, opalish clear and black vase gems and glow in the dark plants in pink, orange, green, and blue. There is a centerpiece of a fake rock with brain coral and some other colorful plants on it. All in all Its a pretty sweet polychromatic set up. (tootin my own horn) Its located on the divider between the kitchen and dining room... I'll get a photo later... I'm a little lazy now.

Here is my question/ help me please request...

My mom wants colorful fish. She was looking at those Glo-Fish, but when I put it into the stocking calculator it says that they may over grow the tank. ( may grow to be 2 inches ) Does it matter? I mean, I know it matters but will a 10 gall halfmoon ( like a 10g hex) be okay for 5 of 'em?

Otherwise she is looking at Tetras or Barbs? I'm so confused!
Basically any suggestions for some colorful fish, that are beginner friendly?

The problem I see Glo-Fish are fish man made from Danio's so very active fish and considering they live in groups too active as a group for a 10g. Very same story for the Barbs there.

Tetra's dep which one's and spec dep on what your water parameters are (pH &KH) that may work. Other options would be something like 1 male betta and shrimp for the bottom?

I think what will help you play around with ideas of different fish is this site its very accurate and gives you warnings on the bottom in red if you chose fish not suitable for your tank size or one another http://www.aqadvisor.com/

Thank you. :)

Even though I'm going to end up taking care of the tank, its my mom's tank... She already said no bettas. :-/

Guppies maybe? I don't know a lot about guppies, but they are kinda sensitive, so you'd have to cycle the tank before you put the fish in.

Glo fish are SO expensive too!

:) So according to the stocking we could do one betta male, 2 ghost shrimp and 5 black neon tetras.

That is about right thou I'd buy 6 Black Neon's :-)
And the shrimp since you have nothing else ont he bottom you can indeed get a group of 8-10 there for your 10g.

You can't really stock too much in that size tank and if you were to ignore the advise and overstock the tank for the 'looks' of it you'd run down a Rd of quite some troubles ahead of ya.

So mom veto the betta, shrimp, neon idea... :(

Maybe it would be helpful to your mom and the future fish if she could free up a few mins of her time each day and come on here herself to discuss with us what options she has with the water & tank size :-)

I know right!
lol
Honestly I wish but I doubt she will. She wants fish but is expecting me to take care of them. :( Thank you for your help Angel079.

when you say 10 gal HM you mean like a bow front?

I would just do the tetras.. I think a group of 6 tetras would do well in a 10. Guppies could work too.. you could do about 6 males. I wouldn't get females because they can come preggo and you could end up with lotsa little guppies LOL
