Clean slate, 5 gal tank stocking ideas?
So I found a LFS that took my 3 catfish and 1 rainbow shark i inherited. My freshwater tank now has "high" levels of nitrites and i beleive is going to be cycling properly.
Im not sure if there are any low level plants i could add into my tank but i would be interested in some greenery.
I saw pictures of small 1.5cm adult fish like dwarf indian puffers, electric blue rams, and black neon tetra's. Any ideas guys? i decided i want to keep it small even if i can only have a few fish, are there other cool small creatures i could add?
Not enough room for rams, the balck neon tetras need to be in groups of at least six to eight so they are iffy, but one dwarf puffer would work.
Some particularly easy ones are:
Java Fern (tie it to something like rocks or DW)
Java Moss (same as above, I have bad luck with it though)
Anubian Nana (might be too big, same as above)
Egeria Densa/Anacharis (plant cuttings in the substrate)
You typically will be limited to foreground plants in a small tank. (I have dwarf sag, normally a foreground plant, as a tall middleground plant in my 5G)
Dwarf Baby Tears would be nice, but requires a LOT of light... have to be careful with high-light plants, since they are always high-nutrient and high-co2 as well.
Everything in proportion.
May I reccomend a school of Ember Tetras or Nortons Lamp-eye?
They're small enough that you could have 6 in the tank.
(I know, because Byron and Angel (respectively) reccomended the same for MY 5G :)
Always throw some inverts to keep it clean as well...
If you order from Sweet Aquatics, (great company, cheap stuff!) you can ask for some free snails in the comments area... They can give you ramshorns MTS and pond snails for free.)
If you decide to go with the single dwarf puffer, get extra pond snails... the puffer will eat the baby ones. :)
thanks for fish and plant replies so fast guys o/
iim looking at pictures online and AqAdvisor also. i like the warning that this fish may reach 1 inch :D
would a dwarf puffer be happy alone? i just watched a few videos of dwarf puffer death squads of 5+ heh
Look up Blue Perch AKA Badis Badis.
They're beautiful fish and relatively intelligent (for a fish)
I'm doing a dwarf puffer tank now in a 5.5 gallon. I have thread on here that I just updated tonight.
Oh man i like your tank john that is lookin cool! I am definately feeling like getting a dwarf puffer! It seems they are inexpensive too. Warm water will be easy to keep. Are you planning on planting at all john?
Just be CERTAIN they're females. The males are way more aggressive from what I've read.
How about endler's guppy very small males or they will populate if added with females. These fish stay very small and maybe later on a couple of months down the road you can add some cherry shrimp. Only when your tank has cycled.
Hypothetically if the fish i had had ick, now the tank is empty, how long could the ick survive?
also my fake plants are partially covered with a thin brown slime, is that a good bacteria thing? bad?
also also, does a thin blue-ish partially "flaky looking" coating over the suface of the water behind my filter in my in-tank filter mean anything, its new, i thought it had something to do with new nitrates or bacteria? all just of my opinions and lack of experience. thought i would milk a few more questions out of this thread before i hijack my own post
