Pearl Gouramis breeding?
Hi Im a newbie at tropicals.....I've had cichlids in the past....I have two pearls in a 45 gallon tall tank, along with rainbows, two powder blues, one flame gourami, two tetras, and two clown loach.....All seem to be doing good, water is good. I came home today and saw one of my pearl gs at top of tank breathing......he im assuming had changed colors also... First reaction was something is wrong....but as I observed he seems fine....IS it possible that him and female are breeding and he was trying to make a bubble nest? Hes been staying around her today.......Also we have a spray bar in tank....Can he still make nest with all the bubbles? :-D
Welcome to TFK!
First off, I would say it would probably be difficult for an anabantid to maintain a bubble nest with a spray bar.
What are your water parameters for the tank? It's possible he was just breathing some air at the surface but you might also have elevated levels of ammonia or nitrite or something that are causing problems.
I would also suggest that your stocking might be problematic down the road. The tetras and rainbows (what species, exactly?) are schooling fish that need to be in larger groups. Same for the clown loaches, but these will also grow to over a foot long so should be in a larger tank. You might also get aggression problems between your various gouramis as these are territorial fish that often don't really appreciate the presence of others of close relatives.
Yeah I am having some issues with the drawf gouramins.......The pearls b/c of their size seem to not be botherd by the others and keep order in the tank. The rainbows are 3 diff types and they all tend to stick together.....Well in the mean time hes quit going to top of tank....But still orange in color.....The water is fine in tank....
All Gourami's are like Bettas, they like to surface breathe. Sometimes when mine surface breathe they do make bubbles that stay for a little while. Its all normal!
