buenos aires tetras
I have a 30 gallon semi-aggressive tank, which currently has a red tailed shark, and 4 zebra danios. I wanted to add just a few more fish, they seem to have plenty of room and everyone has been getting along for about a year. my lfs suggested adding 4-5 buenos aires tetras. i do not know much about them, other than they are omnivorous, which is fine, i have very few live plants, and they are hardy in regards to water conditions. since they are a wee bit nippy, i think they would stand their own with my shark (who is also just a little nippy) and the danios would be fine because they are pretty speedy. anyone think this would work? or have any experience with these fish? i like to make informed fish-choices, and I want what's best for the entire tank.

thanks for your help!

"Wee bit" is an understatement. Buenos Aires tetras are to fin nipping what Michael Phelps is to swimming. They just can't get enough of it. Keeping them in large groups helps somewhat but isn't a guaranteed solution. I'm not sure about keeping them with these particular fish. Sure, danios are fast but so are the tetras. The shark might be mean enough not to take any guff, but the tetras are pretty mean themselves. I'd call it a risky proposition.

What about bloodfin tetras? They have a similar look (although they don't get quite as big) and are much better behaved community residents.

The size of Hemigrammus caudovittatus (Buenos Aires Tetra) is also against it for a 30g; at almost 3 inches, and needing to be in a group of 6 or more, that's asking a lot. It also eats plants.

I would suggest other danios, to keep the Indian/Asian theme with fish from that part of the world.
