Dumb Question: Turn off the lights?
My parents used to/still turn off the lights on the fish tank hoods every night so the little guys can sleep. Is that standard practice? Because I don't have a heater in the tank yet (the water temp is fine), and I'm afraid to turn off the lights as they're the only heat source right now.
1) Yes: you do need to turn off the lights.
Typical lighting periods are 8 hours to 12 hours per day.
2) Please purchase a heater.
The temperature fluctuations in your tank are probably causing you fish to not be "happy campers".
Alrighty, thanks. I'll do that later today.
Well fish don't actually 'sleep' in the sence that humans do, so could you just imagine if you couldn't close your eyes and lights were on all around you all the time? AHH.
Just posting this so there is something that you might compare feelings too perhaps?
Heh, yes I understand. No need to worry about that anymore. They've got their heater, their filter, their airstones, and an owner that knows the lights go out sometimes.
what light are you using, incandecent or flourecent
I'm actually not sure. The light bulbs came with the hood and tank that were given to me and still work. I'm going to replace them with my next paycheck (a week an a half away) regardless because I have no idea how old they are. What do you recommend for guppies and mollies? I haven't even looked into the differences between the two types yet.
well with any fish flourecent is always better, it runs cooler and it will save electricity, with incandecent it is a hot light bulb (try lighting it for 2 hours and place your palm on it for 30 seconds) which can cause temperature fluctuations, also plants wont grow under incandecent lighting, it has to be flourecent
Then I'll rule out incandecent. Thank you for the information!
