Bolivian Ram spits out food?
So i have a Bolivian Ram in my 30gal tank and for some reason he isnt eatting the food i give him... Just like all the other fish im feeding tropical color flakes daily and frozen brine shrimp 2 times a week. and he spits both out. this has been going on for 2 weeks now since i brought him home and im afraid im starving him. any ideas on what do do will he get used to the flakes is it the wrong kind is there special ones for cichlids?
It's common for rams to "spit" food, but then to eat it. Have you tried a good brand of small pelleted food? My rams prefer pellets to flakes. Just a thought. Also, I find my rams prefer frozen bloodworms to brine shrimp, you may want to try worms too.
Kymmie is correct, Bolivian Rams will rarely (if ever) go to the surface to feed, so flakes are useless as the other fish will get them before they sink. Both species of Mikrogeophagus feed from the substrate (as indeed many of the dwarf cichlids do) so pellet and tablet food is ideal. My Bolivian eats with the Corydoras and whiptails and will never go to the surface. Frozen bloodworms are a treat as Kymmie mentioned. And they take the food, chew on it, spit out the large chunk having chewed off a small bit, then repeat. It is the cichlid way of eating. Pencilfish also do this, and some of the rarer characins. Other faster fish (some of the tetras) soon catch on, and just wait alongside and grab the food when the large piece is spit out. This is why feeding slow eaters like pencils can be tricky, too much of this grabbing by other fish and they can simply refuse to try to eat.
THATS EXACTLY WHATS GOING ON!! Spits it out and trys to re eat it over and over and over.... Ill go buy some diff food tomorro! thanks =)
