Inherited 5 gal tank, broke, fish unknown ? w/pix
3 Attachment(s)
i really wanted to name my post HELP because i am very confused. i inherited a 5 gal fishtank that had originally 6 fish, which i dont know but maybe someone can help me zero in on their species.apparently 1 is supposed to be some sort of "shark" my sister was into that kind of stuff

the second night i was taking care of these fish, the tank leaked half its water. so i went to the store and bought a new similair 5 gal "topfin" petsmart tank with the in tank filter and light fixture. ive been feeding some tropical flakes and some pellets, i dont know which are for which fish lol. so anyway i had to put them in a little bucket while the water temp in the new tank normalized but hurridly put them back in as 1 of the little red black fish died in the bucket.

current situation:
so far ive lost 2 of the black/redtipped fish and have 1 left
there are 3 of the bigger 1"-3" long ones with whiskers
my PH meter reads, 7-7.4 and my ammonia is between caution-stress-danger up to .05 T_T
and i replaced 30% of the water in hopes to lower the ammonia

Please help me identify my new fish

hello and welcome.
hopefully someone will be along soon to be a real help to you.
the only fish i can ID is the Red tailed black shark, they like lots of places to hide, and
i think are agressive,i am unable to help with the other two.
it looks like you will be in need of a much larger tank,if you would like to keep these fish.
did you add dechlorinater to the new water ?

ah thanks willow! i thought it might be the shark but he is so small i could barely make out his tiny face. yes i think i added de-clorinator, "aqua-safe"?

would you be able to get a bigger tank ?

small echinda 02-28-2010 01:56 PM

i would like to but i dont think i really can at the moment.
i think they are getting mad at me, should i buy some ammonia neutralizer or "adds beneficial bacteria" product?

Its actually a red fin shark or rainbow shark - not a red tail (which only has a red tail rest of the fins are black). It will grow up to 6 inches and needs a tank of at least a minimum of 55 gallons. I can't be sure what the others are - they look like columbian sharks (really catfish) maybe - I would assume that they are also going to grow very big.

A 55 gallon tank seems daunting, but really its considered a beginner's tank because its easier to take care of, as far as water quality issues, illnesses, etc.

Believe it or not, but a smaller tank is A LOT more work. I didn't realize this until I started with a 14 gallon tank. It was a lot of work - water changes constantly - Nitrite spikes - Ammonia spikes - I was testing it and changing water ALL the time.

Check craigslist for bigger tanks I got my 55gallon for $100.

Good luck and don't give up!

thanks guys, i think im going to go get a much bigger tank, my parents said they wouldnt mind having a fishtank/stand in house. so im going to read up on the fishless cycling so i can have happy alive fish! and possibly plants!

whoopsie slight miss ID there. sorry about that.

if anyone has kept tabs after yesterdays post on this thread, i think it might be a gunthers catfish, horabagrus brachysoma. whew, i think i was worried that if it was a columbian shark catfish i would have to end up slowly changing to saltwater., which i dont think their tank mate would very much enjoy:shock: BUT i am still not very sure if the brachysoma is cool in freshwater, totally....
gunther = AKA: sun/eclipse/bullseye catfish

LOL - I don't know much about the other fish I'll admit - I just googles some pictures!

I only know about the red fin shark because I had one and he was the most playful little guy, but he started to get aggressive in my community tank and I had to rehome him.... I do miss him a lot.
