Room for algae eaters?
I have an eight week old cycled 26g bowfront.
It is happily home to:
7 Neon tetras
4 Peppered Cory Catfish
2 Male Dwarf Gourami's
I have some plastic plants and ornaments that are starting to show some brown algae. Feeding is mostly once daily and a small amount, but it persists.
Would I be pushing it to add some Otocinclus Catfish? Currently I do a 15% water change twice weekly, in case that makes any difference.
If not are there any other fish you would suggest, or am I full to the brim and can look forward to lots of scrubbing?
Brown alage is super common in new tanks. I'd strongly suggest not to get "algae eaters' for one they add to your bio load (so not good), two they don't even eat every kind algae and 3 you may not even like the fish for their looks.
Brown algae once the tank starts to establish itself will subside automatically. Just feed 1x day and keep up the weekly w/c and it'll be alright.
If you want to help your tank being better able to keep up with its load there; add live plants it will definitely help and even look nice while its at it :-)
I have an algea eater, hes a common pleco, and yes they contribute soooo much to waste, and also they do not eat all kinds of algea
I agree with the others above. I have an array of algae eaters but I got them because I like them, not for the "job" they do, but it is an added benefit.
Thanks for all the posts. I'll keep up with the water changes and small feeds and look for it to clear up.
I'm content with the tank as is, and considered it pretty full, but wasn't sure if the brown algae was a bad sign of things to come.
Thanks for the reassurance.
Its perfectly normal in new set up. If its attached to decor like rocks etc just take those out during your weekly w/c and scrub them down with a hard bristle brush to get rid of it quickly. Otherwise just let the tank do its thing :-)
